How to tell the difference between a PS4 V1 and V2 controller?
To differentiate the PS4 V1 and V2 controllers, you need to look at the pad. The PS4 V2 controller has an LED that lights up when the controller is turned on, while the V1 controller's LED does not.
Let's start this tutorial to customize your PS4 controller, here are the steps of disassembly, followed by reassembly.
Part One: Take Apart Your PS4 Controller to Customize It
Step 1: Unscrew the back cover
The first step is simpler than on the Xbox . This operation consists of unscrewing the 4 screws on the back of your controller. To perform this manipulation you will need a Phillips screwdriver .

Step 2: Detach the front and back part of your controller
Now that the screws are removed, you need to detach the front and back shells. To do this, use a plastic spudger to unhook the clips on the right, left, and bottom of your controller. This part of the tutorial can be tricky, so don't hesitate to use force to separate the front shell from the back shell.
Therefore, to perform this manipulation perfectly, we recommend that you do it step by step. Here is an example on the left side:
- Insert the plastic spatula to create an opening;
- Slide the tool along the opening until it reaches the left joystick
- Rotate the plastic spatula slightly to the side to open the shell;
- Repeat this operation on the right side.
Step 3: Remove the plug that connects the LED to the motherboard
Once the controller is disassembled, you will find a small plug that connects the LED to the motherboard, you can carefully remove it in order to separate the front and rear parts of your controller.

Step 4: Dismantling the main structure
If you want to change the front shell, buttons and joysticks, you will then need to remove the main structure:
- Unscrew the screw you see through the battery holder
- Carefully unclip the touchpad cable by gently pulling the tab with flat pliers.
Step 5: Change the joysticks
Once all parts of the controller are clearly separated, you can remove the joysticks by simply pulling on them.

Step 6: Remove the pad, buttons and directional pad
Once the joysticks are removed, remove the buttons and the directional pad. To do this, you will need to pull up on the rubber covers.
Part Two: Reassemble Your Custom PS4 Controller
Step 6: Reassemble the touchpad
First, you need to replace the touchpad. To do this, simply slide the pad under the retaining bar, leaving the plug sticking out.
Step 7: Reposition the main structure
Once the pad is back in place, along with the buttons, directional pad, and joysticks, you can reassemble the main structure by positioning the joysticks on the front shell. Be careful to keep the controller facing down to avoid dropping anything.
Step 8: Replace the pad plug
For this step, don't forget to replace the plug because it connects the pad to the motherboard. You then reposition the battery base and tighten the screw on the main structure.
Step 9: Reassemble the back panel
However, before reassembling the back panel, you must match it with the front case. But first, you must replace the cable and to avoid making a mistake, remember to align the small teeth of the cable with the teeth of the motherboard.
To finalize the customization of your controller, screw the 4 screws back on the back.

Bonus: Customize the back cover of the PS4 controller
Step 1: Remove the white plastic
First, you need to pop off the white plastic located at the back of the controller.
Step 2: Remove the clear plastic
Next, you'll need to remove the clear plastic rectangle. Don't worry, it comes off on its own.

Step 3: Remove the LED
To reach the plug, you will need to remove the LED.

Step 4: Unscrew the plug
To unscrew the plug, you'll need to peel back the tape slightly. Once unscrewed, place the plug to the side. Be careful not to lose any parts.
Step 5: Reattach the plug to the custom PS4 back cover
Once the plug has been removed, simply screw the motherboard back onto your new custom case.

Step 6: Replace the LED, the transparent and white plastic
There is nothing complicated about this step; you simply need to put the LED, the transparent plastic and the white plastic back in the correct order.

Step 7: Reattach the plug to the front case motherboard
Once step 6 is completed, you will find a small plug that connects the LED to the motherboard, you can now reattach the plug with the motherboard in order to associate the front part with the back part of your controller.
Step 8: Snap the front and back shells together before screwing them together
To discover your new controller, you must first complete this step. To do this, reattach the front shell to the back shell and don't forget to replace the four screws located on the back shell of your controller.
